While the Detroit Youth Choir came in second place at the America’s Got Talent finale, losing the $1 million prize to Kodi Lee, the group is still getting a check.

According to Detroit Free Press, a number of Detroit-based foundations and local business leaders announced on Friday (Sept. 20) a $1 million endowment for the empowering group at their Detroit homecoming.

“I was watching you guys and you and Kodi Lee are on that stage, and my heart’s in my throat,” Mayor Mike Duggan told DYT upon making the announcement. “When they announced it was Kodi Lee, I was a little disappointed for a second, but I was like, ‘He deserves a million dollars; he was great.’ The only thing I thought was unfair was there should’ve been two first prizes.”
